Todd Carney

Manly Sea Eagles  coach Geoff Toovey has earmarked NRL discard Todd Carney as a potential replacement for departing halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.

The Sea Eagles are on the lookout for at least one new playmaker after Cherry-Evans announced his departure to the Titans next season. Manly could also possibly be in the market for two halves with five-eighth Kieran Foran poised to sign with the Eels.

"We're obviously in the market for a replacement half," Toovey told Fairfax Media. "There are many candidates out there and Todd is one we will be interested in. We'll just let things settle a bit. We don't want to do too much with our focus on Foran. We'll look at what our options are and he's [Carney] one of them."

Fairfax Media understands any attempt from the Sea Eagles to register Carney's contract will be met with resistance from the NRL, especially given his history of repeated off-field discretions since making his debut at the Raiders in 2004. NRL head of football Todd Greenberg admitted any club interested in Carney's services would need to put forward a compelling case to convince the game's governing body he was fit to return.
