Raiders fall short of stirring comeback

The Canberra Raiders have almost pulled off one of the best comebacks in NRL History, falling just one point short to lose 25-24 against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

The Raiders were down 24-0 with 16 minutes remaining in the match, before four quick tries brought them into the remarkable position of having a chance to win the match.

Only a Peter Wallace field goal in the opening exchanges of extra time would put an end to what seemed like it would be an amazing comeback, as the Broncos halfback slotted the one pointer to get the win for Brisbane.

Coming into the side at the last minute for Josh Miller, Josh Papalii was outstanding for the Raiders as he scored two tries, while Glen Buttriss and Jarrod Croker were involved in the other Raiders tries.

Blake Ferguson kicked goals for the Green Machine as Jarrod Croker carried a leg injury into the match, slotting four from four as the Raiders made their charge towards the frantic finish.

The Raiders were their own worst enemies in the first half as poor ball control and ill-discipline cost them early points, as tries to Broncos trio Alex Glenn, Dale Copley and Gerard Beale gave them an 18-0 lead at the break.

When Josh Hoffman scored just after halftime it looked as though the Broncos would run away with the match, but a gallant Raiders scored their four tries within the short period.

BRISBANE BRONCOS 25 (Alex Glen, Dale Copley, Gerard Beale, Josh Hoffman Tries, Peter Wallace 4 Goals; Peter Wallace Field Goal) defeated CANBERRA RAIDERS 24 (Josh Papalii 2, Glen Buttriss, Jarrod Croker Tries; Blake Ferguson 4 Goals) at Suncorp Stadium. Crowd 21, 124.
