CRRL: Goulburn Defeat Woden in Tight Encounter
« on: June 18, 2017, 05:12:31 PM »
Intent on making amends for their one point defeat earlier in the season, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs have defeated the Woden Valley Rams 26-16 at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Sunday afternoon.

After a probing opening stanza of play, Goulburn were the first to trouble to scorers through five-eighth Nick Cornish after some good work from his brother Tyler, sent him over the try line.

Woden fought hard and despite enjoying the better field position, the Bulldogs were able to double their lead through Zach Hart after he ran through the Woden line unopposed.

Woden finally managed to trouble the scores in the 24th minute when Goulburn winger Dominic Stephens fumbled the ball in the in goal to allow Liam Murphy to score.

However, Zach Hart scored his second try on the verge of halftime with a solo effort in the left corner to send the Bulldogs into the sheds at halftime with an 18-6 lead.

The Rams piled on the pressure after halftime with three consecutive sets but they were unable to convert that pressure into points.

However, the Rams managed to cross the try line thanks to a spectacular effort by Michael Geiger. Having allowed a Goulburn kick bounce awkwardly near his own try line before gathering the ball and running the length of the field to score.

With momentum on their side, the Rams bamboozled the Bulldogs defence with a clever play from dummy half to narrow the margin to two points. Playing ball only meters from the try line, hooker Kosta Posantzis shaped to pass the ball to his left before passing to his right to the charging Cleve McGhie who scored.

The Bulldogs were dealt a blow 16 minutes from time when second-rower Blake Hewitt copped a knee to the head causing him to leave the field with concussion.

However, they continued to ply pressure on the Rams by forcing consecutive line drop outs before Pat Cooke delivered the final blow four minutes from fulltime after he collected a pass from Tyler Cornish to score in the corner.

Tyler Cornish put the icing on the cake after the siren when he swung his leg at a loose ball hoping to kick it dead. However, the ball stayed in play before Cornish regathered to the kick to score, securing a 26-16 for Goulburn.
