With both teams desperate to claim their first win of the season, the West Belconnen Warriors defeated the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 24-14 at Seears Workwear Oval on Friday night.
In what was a hard-fought match, both sides showed plenty of determination and desperation but a piece of Katie Glover magic late in the second half was enough to separate the two sides.
“I didn’t think I was going to make it but I just had to run,” Glover said. “Finally we won, we sure need one.”
Down at halftime, the Warriors produced a flawless second half to secure the two competition points, something that West Belconnen prop, Megan Ayers was proud of.
“We cleaned the cobwebs out and we played how we practiced,” Ayers said. “It’s awesome to have won our first match of the season. The girls are great, they are a young bunch of girls and they’ve got a lot ahead of them.”
Yet to trouble the scorers in their opening four matches, the Warriors scored their first try of the season in style with a slick short side play finished off by fullback Monica Stopins.
The Kangaroos hit back shortly afterwards when Kyree Parsons weaved her way through the Warriors defence before Hope Davison isolated a Warriors defender close to the line to give Queanbeyan the lead.
Ayers gave West Belconnen hope when the prop barged her way over from close range after receiving the ball from dummy half but a second Hope Davison try gave the Kangaroos the lead right on halftime.
However, West Belconnen started the second half in determined fashion and capatalised when the Kangaroos dropped the ball from the kick off. Running from dummy half, Glover shaped to run left, bamboozling the Queanbeyan defence before running into the subsequent hole in the defensive line.
With the scores at 14 all, both sides were solid in defence as neither team were able to make any inroads.
However, a wonderful solo try from Glover broke the deadlock around ten minutes from fulltime. Collecting the ball in broken play near halfway, the five-eighth darted and stepped her way around the Kangaroos defence to score under the posts.
Queanbeyan lock Jessica Nesbitt was given ten minutes in the sinbin for a high shot before the Warriors scored a late try to secure their first win of the season. Ayers once again unsettled the Queanbeyan defence with a damaging run before Glover scored her third try of the night to make the score 24-14.
