CRRL: Country Brush Aside Scotland
« on: October 23, 2017, 01:34:24 PM »
Nine Austbrokers Canberra CRC players finished their season on a high as the Country U23’s representative side beat Scotland 50-14 in Ballina on Friday night.

Among the try scorers on Friday night was West Belconnen Warriors centre, Ryley Thomas, who scored a memorable hattrick.

“Most of them were long range tries but my little legs were able to get there,” Thomas said. “They all came off the back of those errors from Scotland.

“Us Country boys pride ourselves on taking any opportunity we could get, whether it was a set play or off the back of their errors.”

Having narrowly suffered defeat against Samoa a week earlier, Thomas said the squad weren’t surprised to come away with victory against Scotland.

“I wouldn’t say we were surprised,” Thomas said. “We are a confident bunch, we had a good two weeks in camp and we had some very experienced coaches in Josh Cale, Adam Berry and Andrew Ryan.

“They just hammered us all week, telling us to be confident and to play a bit of footy. That’s what we are there for and that’s all we did in that Scotland game and obviously we came away with the goods.”

Thomas is hopeful that the performances that he and his teammates produced have caught the eyes of NSW Cup and NRL clubs.

“It’s always the dream that we want to go further and make it as high as we can,” Thomas said. “The U23’s concept is good, it gives the blokes who went under the radar in juniors or U20s a second chance or a first chance for some people.”
