Boost for Canberra Raiders Cup

The race for the 2011 Canberra Raiders Cup took an interesting twist yesterday afternoon, when nine Canberra Raiders NRL squad members were drafted into the local competition for the remainder of the season.

Michael Picker (Goulburn), Trevor Thurling (Queanbeyan Blues) and James Stuart (Tuggeranong) have been aligned to their junior clubs for when they are not playing at NRL level, while Danny Galea (Yass), Jarrad Kennedy (Gungahlin), Sam Mataora (Belconnen United), David Milne (Woden), Daniel Vidot (Queanbeyan Kangaroos) and Josh Miller (West Belconnen) were all drawn out at random for their new feeder clubs.

This means when these players are not selected for the Raiders NRL team they will play in the Canberra Raiders Cup, providing they are fit and available on the advice of Raiders medical staff.

The players will start the new arrangement from this weekend, however only three Raiders (Milne, Stuart and Picker) are expected to turn out for their new clubs, due to injury and suspension (Josh Miller).

With the Raiders relationship with Souths Logan having to be amended as of June 30, Raiders players who play in Queensland for the Magpies from this weekend have been made ineligible for the NRL for the rest of 2011.

This means Travis Waddell, Drury Low, Mark Nicholls, Mark Appleton, Mark Ioane and Nick Skinner will play the remainder of the year for Souths Logan and will be unavailable for the Raiders.
