Raiders named to battle Warriors

The Canberra Raiders have made the one change to their side to take on New Zealand this weekend, after Trevor Thurling was ruled out for the season today with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Thurling’s injury sees Josh Miller come onto the bench for the Raiders this week with Joe Picker named on an extended bench.

Jarrod Croker (back) and Josh Papalii (groin) have pulled through after their return from injury, while Joel Thompson will be assessed during the week after suffering a concussion against the Dragons. Thompson is expected to play on Sunday.

Raiders Coach David Furner said the win against the Dragons was a good one for the side, but realised there was another huge challenge this weekend against New Zealand.

“I was pleased with the way the side played in the second half last night and to keep a side like the Dragons to one point in the second half showed the character of the side,” Furner said. “This week we face a Warriors team that’s in great form and they have size and speed in the backs and plenty of muscle up front.”

Furner said it was disappointing to lose another player in Thurling for the season, but said it once again gives a chance for another player to come back into the side and impress.

“I’m gutted for Trev as he’s been great for us recently and he had worked so hard on getting himself back into the team and into form,” he said. “It gives a guy like Josh Miller or Joe Picker the chance to come back this week and I know they would be both keen to make an impact after missing out on the Dragons win.”
