Canberra referees withdraw strike threat

David Adams says match officials have had enough of being abused on and off the field.

A strike by referees in the Canberra Raiders Cup rugby league competition looks set to be called off.

The referees had been threatening to boycott this weekend's final found of the regular season in protest over an increase in abuse on and off the field.

Canberra District Rugby League Referees Association (CDRLRA) has sent a letter to Canberra Region Rugby League calling on clubs to stop the abuse of referees and demanding a statement from the league supporting match officials.

CDRLRA chairman David Adams says the league and clubs have pledged to meet the demands.

"We're just waiting on confirmation for the last couple of pieces of correspondence that we demanded in our correspondence with the league," Mr Adams said.

"Some contrition, some contraction from the clubs we've had issues with, will be forthcoming as far as I understand.

"Once they have arrived then that will be confirmed that the strike will not be going ahead."
