Queanbeyan clubs set up Canberra Raiders Cup finals derby

IT will be an all-Queanbeyan affair in the Canberra Raiders Cup reserve grade semi-final this weekend when the Kangaroos take on the Blues at Seiffert Oval.

The winner of the cross-town derby will progress through to the preliminary final in two weeks against either the Woden Valley Rams or the Yass Magpies.

Both sides finished the regular season on 26 competition points with the Blues edging the Kangaroos out for third-place on for and against.

The last time these two sides met in round 11, the Blues handed the Kanagroos a 60-20 drubbing at Freebody Oval.

Kangaroos favoured in under-18s

THE Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be clear favourites to take out the under-18s division-two title after an undefeated season.

The Kangaroos run of 12 straight victories saw them comfortably claim the minor premiership, finishing five wins clear of the second-placed Queanbeyan Blues.

The Roos can take plenty of confidence into the finals having beaten the Blues, their most likely grand final opponents, four times already this year.

In their most recent match-up, the Kangaroos produced a stirring second-half fightback to down the Blues 30-24.

Bungendore Tigers secure minor premiership

THE Bungendore Tigers have taken out the George Tooke Shield minor premiership for the first time since 1999 after thrashing Crookwell 64-4 in last weekend’s final round.

In a performance unmatched by the club in recent memory, the Tigers went through the 2011 season undefeated scoring an impressive 700 points in the process and conceding just 184.

Bungendore now has the weekend off before facing the winner of Saturday’s preliminary final between Binalong and Boomanulla.

The Tigers, who are led by captain/coach and former Queanbeyan Blues junior Jeremy Osbourne, posted 15 wins from 16 starts this year. The side’s only blemish was an 18-all draw with Bingalong in round two.

Queanbeyan junior selected in Australian side

A stand out performance at last weekend’s National Indigenous Under-16s Championships on the Gold Coast has earned Queanbeyan’s Jesse Collins a place on the Australian Indigenous side.

The 16-year-old got the nod from the national selectors after starring at half back for the Combined States Team where he played alongside Queanbeyan Kangaroos teammates Braeden Smith and Brandon Williams.

Collins will embark on a week-long tour of New Zealand with the Australian squad next month before taking part in the Australian Championships from the 25th of September in Sydney.

The Southern NSW/ACT side featuring Queanbeyan’s Brendan Baxter, Brendan Bamblett and Conrad Johnson-Capewell finished runner-up at the tournament after falling to Southern Queensland in the grand final.

Queanbeyan swimmers in the fast lane

SWIMMERS from the Queanbeyan Leagues Swim Club produced a number of strong results at last weekend’s NSW State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

In total, eight swimmers from the QLSC under the age of 12 qualified for the championships, the most of any ACT affiliated club.

Queanbeyan club captain William Pulley was a standout after securing five top-10 placings during the three-day event.

Andrew Catchpole, Amy Sokic and Lauren Elliot also recorded top-ten finishes.

The championships were the culmination of a hectic recent schedule for several of Queanbeyan’s swimmers who have only recently returned from the National Schools Championships in Melbourne.

Queanbeyan ground closures

WITH finals season upon us, local sporting teams will be hoping for clear weather this weekend after Queanbeyan’s sports grounds were closed for action earlier in the week.

Queanbeyan Council was due to reassess the closures today but should there be more heavy rain over the next two days it could throw cause significant disruptions to finals scheduling across the city.

A spokesperson for council said it was general practice to shut grounds after a period of significant rain but that they weren’t anticipating major dramas over the weekend.
