Queanbeyan's weekend sports wrap

And then there were two. After five months of competition across the codes, only two Queanbeyan teams still remain in finals contention this season.

The Blues set up the possibility of an all-Queanbeyan local rugby league grand final with a 32-25 win over the Belconnen Scholars on the weekend but that was the city’s only finals bright spot.

Defending premiers Queanbeyan City FC and first-time finalists the Queanbeyan Yowies both bowed out while the Tigers and Monaro Panthers called an end to their 2011 campaigns.

On Saturday, the Queanbeyan Yowies were bundled out of the NSW Waratah State League finals after a 55-51 defeat at the hands of the Coffs Harbour Suns at the Newcastle Basketball Centre.

The Yowies won 17 of their 18 matches en-route to the semi-final but came up short against the Suns after star shooter Steph Perch was forced from the court with a serious knee injury.

Queanbeyan City FC also met with finals heartbreak after suffering a 1-0 loss to ANUFC. The result means City will not have the opportunity to defend its’ 2010 ACT State League title.

And the Queanbeyan Tigers finished their season on a high with a 97-point drubbing of the Tuggeranong Hawks at Dairy Farmers Park.

On Sunday, it was a less positive finish to the year for the Monaro Panthers after they went down 1-0 to Tuggeranong United at Riverside Stadium.

And the Blues moved through to their first Canberra Raiders Cup grand final since 2008 with a 32-25 win over the Belconnen Scholars at West Belconnen.
