Webber second best

QUEANBEYAN’S Mark Webber secured his seventh podium of the Formula One season last weekend with a second-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Webber came home behind Red Bull Racing teammate and runaway Driver’s Championship frontrunner Sebastian Vettel who stretched his lead at the top of the driver’s standings to 92 points.

It is becoming increasingly unlikely anybody will be able to catch the reigning German world champion with just seven races remaining on the 2011 calendar.

The one-two finish for Red Bull comes after Webber recently announced he has re-signed with the British based team for 2012.

Bungendore Tigers suffer first loss

THE Bungendore Tigers will face the Hall Hornets in the George Tooke Shield preliminary-final at Seiffert Oval this Sunday after going down to the Binalong Brahmans 17-16 last weekend.

The Tigers had finished the regular season as undefeated minor premiers but were brought up short by the Brahmans with a Steve Kirby field goal proving the difference.

Hall will go into Sunday’s sudden-death showdown with plenty of confidence after upsetting Boomanulla 28-26 in the minor semi-final.

Bungendore scored a 36-28 win over the Hornets the last time the two sides met in round 15.

Blues reserves face Yass

THE Queanbeyan Blues will meet the Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon for a spot in the Canberra Raiders Cup reserve-grade grand final.

The Blues head into the match on the back of a week off after beating the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 34-18 in the minor semi-final.

Yass went down 42-10 to the Woden Valley Rams last weekend but comfortably dispatched the Blues 42-6 the last time the two sides met in round 13.

The Blues have already qualified teams through to the grand final in both first grade and the under-18s competitions.

Kangaroos lose in under-18s derby

THE Queanbeyan Kangaroos under-18s side has been forced into an elimination preliminary-final against the Tuggeranong Buffaloes after falling to the Queanbeyan Blues 32-24 last weekend.

The Kangaroos held a 24-12 lead at the break but were overhauled in the second half as emerging Blues star Tyson Endacott grabbed a hat-trick.

Regardless of the result, the Kangaroos are all but certain to move through to next weekend’s grand final with the Buffaloes having won just two games all season.

In the final round of regular season competition, the Roos inflicted a 66-12 demolition on the south-Canberra club.
