Gorrell named Roos' best and fairest

LAST Friday’s Queanbeyan Kangaroos presentation night was a celebration of the club’s remarkable second-straight Canberra Raiders Cup title.

Already though, the two-time defending premiers are looking toward an historic ‘threepeat’ in 2012.

Next season’s kick off may still be six months away, but Kangaroos captain/coach Aaron Gorrell said the club was wasting no time in preparing for a third championship tilt.

‘‘We’ve already re-signed everyone from this season and now we’re just looking to probably add a couple of blokes to the squad,’’ he said.

‘‘We might still look for another centre and we’re probably a little light on front rowers so a couple of new blokes would fit in nicely.’’

The Kangaroos appear set to retain nearly the entirety of the club’s premiership winning side with George Griffin (English Super League) and winger Andrew Hunter (retirement) the only likely omissions. Gorrell, meanwhile, capped off his stellar season by taking out the Kangaroos first grade best and fairest award at last week’s club presentation.

Gorrell pointed to forwards Steve Dunn and Nathan Nash and fullback Daniel Watt as three players who had been deserving of taking out the club’s top honour.

‘‘There were probably about 12 blokes who could have got it so it’s a big honour to get it as part of such a great side,’’ he said.

‘‘It was a pretty satisfying season considering we were pretty much written off halfway through the year and even with a couple of weeks to go no one was giving us a chance.’’

In the night’s other first-grade awards, Watt was named as players’ player and most consistent.

Watt shared the players’ player award with grand final man of the match winning halfback Clint Wright, while the departing Griffin was heralded as the side’s most improved.

After only joining the side midway through the season, livewire hooker Jordan Macey claimed the coach’s award.
