On court for a cause THEY’LL be on opposing sides of the ledger come Sunday’s Canberra Raiders Cup grand final.
But that won’t stop Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell and Queanbeyan Blues opposite Simon Woolford from teaming up less than 24 hours beforehand in the most unlikely of arenas.
The two former NRL players are set to take to the netball court as part of Queanbeyan Netball Association’s celebrity charity match on Saturday.
Gorrell will coach the side which will include a number of well-known local personalities including Tigers coach Kade Klemke, mayor Tim Overall and Woolford among others.
The celebrity outfit will play off against Queanbeyan’s representative State League side, all in the name of raising funds for the ACT Cancer Support Group.
The celebrity match has been reborn in 2013 after the QNA successfully hosted a similar event two years ago.
“I think one of the driving reasons behind bringing the game back was that a few people within the association have unfortunately been touched personally by cancer,” organiser Shannon Owen said. “We wanted to support a charity that was in a position to support them.
“It’s a way to put some support back into an organisation that does so much to support others so hopefully we can get the community involved. The more people there on the day, the more we can raise.”
In a bid to raise additional funds, each of the celebrities will be auctioned off prior to the match with the highest bidder receiving:
- Naming rights to the celebrity for the day;
- A ‘meet and greet’ with the celebrities and;
- An opportunity to promote their business or organisation on the day, and post-match via the QNA website and social media.
The celebrity auction will commence at 12.15pm.
A limited number of catered court side tickets will also be on offer for $30 with all proceeds going toward the ACT Cancer Support Group.
