The Canberra Raiders Under 20s side has lost a dramatic Holden Cup qualifying final to Canterbury Bulldogs 27-26 in Golden Point extra time at ANZ Stadium.
The Raiders started slowly but clawed back to hold a 26-22 lead with 10 minutes remaining. However, a controversial 73rd minute try to Canterbury fullback, Patrick Templeman saw the scores locked at 26 all at the end of regulation time, before Templeman scored the winning field goal.
Raiders opened the scoring in the eighth minute when fullback Jack Ahearn stepped his way past multiple defenders to touch down. Unfortunately, Mitch Cornish missed the conversion.
The Dogs struck back five minutes later when a neat chip resulted in a converted try to Jaelen Feeney. They then extended that lead after Feeney scored a try out on the right touch line.
Late inclusion Jeremy Hawkins made his presence felt in the 23rd minute of play when he ran 85 metres untouched to score under the posts. Cornish’s conversion levelled the scores. The Dogs were back in front, though, not long after when Shaun Lane scored off the back of a Feeney kick.
