How GI exit could spark salary cap stand-off

Greg Inglis may have called time on a glistening career but the South Sydney talisman could still find himself at the centre of an NRL salary cap standoff, according to Nine’s senior rugby league journalist Danny Weidler.

Speaking on 100% Footy, Weidler suggested rival clubs could object to the $1.5 million cleared in the Rabbitohs’ cap by Inglis’ retirement if the 2014 premiership winner is paid a large salary for his impending community role with the club.

The contention is that Inglis’ retirement has afforded South Sydney another chance to pick up a top-tier player. If the club hand him a favourable salary in his role with the organisation, rival teams could fire-up over what may be perceived as an agreement to compensate the star for the money he opted-out of by retiring 18 months before his lucrative playing contract was due to expire.
