Queensland coach Kevin Walters has defended the Maroons’ culture of loyalty after favourite sons Matt Scott and Darius Boyd were omitted for the opening game of the State of Origin series at the MCG on June 6.

It is the second time in as many years Walters has come under scrutiny for his team after he made the decision last year to overlook Melbourne fullback Billy Slater for Boyd – a decision he quickly reversed after the Maroons lost game one.

There is even more pressure on Walters this year following the shock retirement of skipper Cameron Smith, while North Queensland’s Johnathan Thurston and Sydney Roosters’ Cooper Cronk have also hung up the boots from representative football.
