Congratulations to the Raidercast 2016 Canberra Raiders Player of the Year, Josh Hodgson!
In the most successful season at the Raiders in many years in which the club made it all the way to the Preliminary Finals, picking just one player of the year may seem like an impossible task at first. The team performed so well as a group that the entire squad deserves recognition. However, there can be only one winner of the Raidercast Player of the Year Award, and the player we picked was a true standout in the team and a major reason for the club's success in 2016.
When Josh Hodgson signed with the Canberra Raiders from English club Hull KR, he was considered a talented hooker who had already won international selection for his country. While Hodgson had a very good debut season at his new club in 2015, 2016 proved to be a breakout year beyond all expectations for the Englishman. So dangerous was Hodgson from dummy-half that for much of the season he was considered the favorite for the Dally M award.
During the 2016 season, Hodgson proved he has all the skills to be the game's premier number nine in the years to come. Whether it was his crisp service from the ruck, his vision and long kicking game, or even his ability to play as a second halfback and ball-play with the best of them, Josh showed the entire Rugby League world just how good he could be as he helped to turn the Green Machine into a very serious contender for the title.
