Tilse is relishing life in the starting side

After several dominant performances off the interchange bench, Dane Tilse has been rewarded with a birth in the starting side and his great form has ensured that the Canberra Raiders bookend has retained his starting spot.

Tilse has averaged 113 metres and 17 tackles since moving into the starting side and his form has kept State of Origin representative David Shillington on the bench for the last two games.

The affable front-rower is relishing his starting role and is focused on not giving up his much-loved number eight jersey.

“I’ve been happy to start the last two weeks and I’ve felt that I’ve been doing my job fairly well,” said Tilse.

Read About a Raider - Dane Tilse

Read About a Raider is a weekly segment in which you, the club’s members, get to ask a specific player for that week any question you like. This week’s player is towering front-rower and proud father Dane Tilse.

Aleks Berzins: How tall are you?

Dane: I’m tall enough to have to duck under most doorways Aleks! I’m 200cm tall.

Martin Hennessey: Great year so far Dane! Have you always played prop or did you go through a growth spurt as a teenager?

Dane: I haven’t always played prop. I used to play five-eighth when I was ten and eleven for the Scone Thoroughbreds. We won the Grand Finals both of those years so I really should have stayed there.

After playing five-eighth those years I got a bit bigger and moved into the back-row and from there I had a big growth spurt and ended up in the front-row. I’ve been in the front-row ever since.

2013 Player Review: Dane Tilse

The ever-reliable Dane Tilse delivered another professional season for the Canberra Raiders and was one of only two players at the club to have played in every game in 2013. This impressive feat enabled the tallest player at the club the opportunity to notch up 150 NRL games for his beloved Green Machine.

Tilse has proven to be a tireless and consistent workhorse in the middle of the field for the Raiders since joining the club in 2006.

Aside from his first year with the club, in which he spent the majority of the season in reserve grade, Tilse has portrayed his durability and toughness by only playing under 20 games in a season on one occasion.

Since his full season of first grade in 2007, Tilse has averaged an impressive 23 games of NRL per year. Given that Tilse plays in arguably the toughest position on a rugby league team, the front-row, this is quite some feat.
