Williams out to boost NRL claims

He made his representative debut this year and is about to wear a New South Wales jersey for the first time, but Raiders halfback Sam Williams is still without an NRL club for next season.

The forgotten Canberra playmaker has the perfect opportunity to stake his claim for a permanent spot in the NRL when he lines up for the NSW Cup representative team against the Queensland Residents next Wednesday night.

More than 60,000 fans are tipped to be at ANZ Stadium for the match, which is a curtain-raiser to the sold-out State-of-Origin decider.

It's a stark contrast to the couple of hundred supporters Williams has been playing in front of for the past couple of months.

Dragons sign Sam Williams for 2014

St George Illawarra have signed halfback Sam Williams from Canberra on a one-year NRL deal starting in 2014.

Williams had been strongly linked to the Dragons after failing to play regular first grade this year with the Raiders, after starring in their charge to the finals last season.

The Dragons couldn't put together a deal for Williams before the June 30 deadline, meaning he can't play for them this season but he will add some much needed spark to the joint venture's attack next year.

Williams will join Melbourne playmaker Gareth Widdop in the halves for the Dragons in 2014.

A former Raiders rookie of the year, Williams appears to have fallen out of favour at Canberra with Terry Campese and Josh McCrone coach David Furner's preferred halves combination.

The 22-year-old Williams will join the Dragons in November ahead of the 2014 NRL season with an option for a second season in 2015.

He has played seven games for Canberra this year and will feature in the NSW Residents side against Queensland Residents in the curtain raiser to Wednesday's State of Origin decider.

Williams to get one last game in green

Sam Williams looks set to replace Mitch Cornish in the Raiders team to play the Sharks this Sunday.

Sam tweeted that he is "very excited" to be able to ware the famous lime green jersey one last time before he joins the Dragons next season.

Mitch Cornish was banned from making his debut against the Sharks by the NRL due to salary cap restrictions.

Williams plays final Raiders game against same team he made debut against

Williams made his NRL debut with a man-of-the-match performance against Cronulla in 2011 and unexpectedly gets to play his last game for the Raiders against the Sharks, too.

Williams has spent the bulk of the season in NSW Cup but earned a first-grade reprieve after Canberra's second-tier salary cap exemption to debut Mitch Cornish was denied.

''A couple of weeks ago, I probably thought I'd played my last game for the Raiders and I'm pretty excited to get another run,'' Williams said.

''It's certainly disappointing from Mitch's end.

''Players like Berro, who has had a pretty good career, we want to play well for them and finish on a good note.''

Fellow departing players Mick Picker (injury) and Dimitri Pelo will also be acknowledged before the game, while it remains unclear whether it will be Joe Picker's final match for the Raiders.

2013 Player Review: Sam Williams

With his pathway to a fulltime halfback position in the NRL congested, local junior Sam Williams sadly farewells the Canberra Raiders in search of a greater opportunity, however the door is most certainly left open for the talented playmaker to return one day given the character and the promising development he showed in 2013.
